The current supply chain disruption is one of the many types of crises the marketplace has faced over the years. A Gartner report shows that less than half of organizations have actively started to build a roadmap for supply chain digitization transformation, despite it being a key priority for most leaders. Another survey showed only two-thirds of supply chain organizations felt the strategy and execution of their supply chains were well aligned.

Business intelligence (BI) and analysis tools were the promised future, where business users could easily access and transform huge volumes of corporate-wide data to predict business outcomes and future demand. However, the reality is that traditional BI solutions and ERP systems are static and can only provide a snapshot of the present or past.

Decision intelligence rests on prescriptive analytics

Such foresight comes from adding a prescriptive analytics layer to a firm’s supply chain management. This layer answers the question “what should happen” and becomes the basis for generating decisions, not just insights. This approach elevates the level of analytic inquiry, using machine learning and optimization models to propose a course of action based on data, analytics and business models.

Ultimately, this can dramatically transform how companies manage the flow of goods throughout their supply chains because it resolves the question how to proceed to achieve the targeted outcome.

Decision intelligence and the future of the supply chain

Taking a new approach to supply chains relies on a new vision for data in an organization. Data is the engine of growth and the source of intelligence that will allow businesses to get a grip on their supply chains.

This means drawing on data from a wider variety of sources than ever before. Businesses need more actionable, real-time data from across their supply chains. They need to quickly and securely access multiple data sources across on-premises data centers and multiple clouds. To plan for future shocks, businesses need to learn from this historic moment and feed this information into predictive and prescriptive analytics modeling.

Turkcell’s supply chain management transformation is driven by technology and communication

Ali Türk, Executive Vice President of Supply Chain Management at Turkcell, discusses how Turkey’s largest mobile operator is driving efficiency with customers at the forefront

Turkcell, the largest mobile operator in Turkey, has undergone a significant shift in its procurement and supply chain operations driven by a radical ideological change to the business itself. “Turkcell is a unique company, a digital operator,” says Ali Türk, Executive Vice President of Supply Chain Management at the firm. “We are dealing not only with the mobile part, but also the commerce part: it’s one entity.” With a focus on establishing a high quality internal infrastructure, technology and network infrastructure, and meaningful, functional digital services, Turkcell has undergone a structural change that highlights the importance of procurement to its wider strategy. As part of supply chain management’s realignment as a strategic function, Turkcell established a dedicated procurement committee to drive positive change. Meeting every week alongside the CEO, Murat Erkan, the committee makes key decisions on the company’s biggest purchases. While these make up 3% of the firm’s purchases at large, their combined volume equates to 80% of the total made by Turkcell. “All of the company’s top executives are fully involved in these processes, and they acknowledge and evaluate all of the aspects of procurement investments and strategy.” Not only that, but a unification of operations between teams has been achieved through the adoption of agile management methodologies, enabling a consistent thread for supply chain management strategy to follow throughout the organisation.

These structural adaptations are bolstered by the application of disruptive technologies, driving efficiency and transparency at Turkcell. However, Türk stresses that digital transformation is, to Turkcell, a tool rather than a goal. “Digital transformation is a must to survive in our era,” he says. “It enables us to focus on optimising costs in a sustainable structure, to increase revenues, and to increase the level of quality we offer our customers.” A particular area of interest for Türk is robotic process automation (RPA) and the benefits it could have for internal teams. He adds that the application of this technology will be based on what those teams themselves view as the areas that would benefit most from automation, and the freeing up of staff from repetitive tasks that it would enable. “We have procurement departments, logistics departments, real estate, construction and site acquisition departments, and they are each highlighting their requirements,” he says. Once those needs are defined, they each collaborate with Turkcell’s ICT department to drive the gradual rollout of RPA through specific digitalisation departments. “For example, supply registration, fee operation, calculation of monthly payments, operation of the tender process, opening site acquisition and scrap sales orders; they’re all operational issues and ritual issues,” says Türk. “Right now, we are developing some use cases and we will forward those tasks to RPA.”

Samsung eyes blockchain technology to cut supply chain costs by 20%

Samsung is targeting the introduction of blockchain technology that could reduce its global shipping costs by up to 20%.

Song Kwang-woo, vice president of Samsung SDS, the Korean multinational’s specialist technology arm, has revealed the company is investigating the possibility of using a blockchain ledger system to ‘fuel its digital transformation’.

By automating channels of communication both internally and with port authorities, it predicts that it will be able to improve efficiency by up to a fifth – potentially saving billions of dollars every year.

“It (blockchain) will have an enormous impact on the supply chains of manufacturing industries,” said Song, speaking to Bloomberg. “Blockchain is a core platform to fuel our digital transformation.”

Samsung works with approximately 2500 suppliers around the world, building relationships around five key criteria: cost competitiveness, human resources capacity, on-time delivery, response to risk and supplier competitiveness. SDS says it will handle around 488,000 tonnes of air cargo and 1mn TEUs in 2018 alone.

Last May, SDS launched a blockchain pilot to track imports and exports of shipments in Korea’s shipping sector, a trial that concluded at the end of the year.
